Koss_6264rtMy Passion is Problem-Solving

I enjoy doing so in a manner that is spirited, imaginative and as straightforward and cost effective as possible. In keeping with that philosophy, my approach to the practice of employee benefits law and consulting embraces a strong commitment to a collaborative work ethic, dedication to continuous quality improvement, learning and teaching, and valuing the creation and maintenance of mentor relationships.

Professional Background

Prior to establishing his employee benefits and mediation practice, John was a principal and managing senior consultant for an international benefits consulting firm for 12 years and prior to that was ERISA Counsel for a Fortune 100 international manufacturing firm for five years. Concurrent with his employment Mr. Koss taught Business Law as an adjunct assistant professor at Hunter College in New York City for four years and rendered pro bono services as an Early Neutral Evaluator for the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York. He also served as a pro bono commentator on draft labor laws for the Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (“CEELI”), a public service project of the American Bar Association. He currently renders pro bono service for the Better Business Bureau as an arbitrator.

Education and Credentials

Mr. Koss graduated and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors in History and Economics from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He later earned his Juris Doctor from Loyola University of Chicago School of Law. In 2000, he earned his certification as a Mediator from the University of California Berkeley Extension. He is admitted to the practice of law in the States of Illinois and New York.

Background and Interests

John was born and raised in Chicago and worked there for five years before moving to New York City, where he lived for 11 years. He has lived and worked in San Francisco for 20 years. He currently works as a private practitioner and has over 20 years of experience with ERISA. Most recently the Affordable Care Act (“ACA”) has commanded more of his time.

Mr. Koss’s work history demonstrates an intimate familiarity with the workplace and its dynamics. His CV includes working as a bank teller, high school teacher, lawyer, and an adjunct assistant professor at City University of New York.  John has offered his services on a pro bono basis to community legal clinics and the Shanti Organization in San Francisco. He is also active in volunteering his services as an arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau in the San Francisco Bay area.

When not grappling with ERISA or health care plan summaries, John loves a good book, bicycling to nowhere in particular (flatlands preferred), cross-country skiing, playing the piano, experimenting with photography, and traveling at a moment’s notice.
